KEY WEST

General information

Our Key West packages are tailor-made to suit you and can be booked anytime between November and June.

In Key West we do all our riding a couple of miles off shore in what we call the ‘Flats’. Here the water is no more than knee deep and as the name suggests totally flat for miles in each direction. This also means we can ride in all wind directions. We have a 19ft boat that we use for transport to and from the flats as well as a rescue boat, and we have a 30ft house boat that we keep anchored out there that we use as our base for the day. Having this boat out there means if you have any non riding partners coming with you they are more than welcome to come and hang out on the house boat while you kite, we have a sun deck on top plus a range of snorkel equipment for their use. It’s also a great place to relax while taking a break from kiting.

Beginners can feel safe with the knowledge they can always touch the bottom.

Riders will really enjoy the long down winders we can offer. Imagine having your kites blown up, lines rigged, riding in butter flat water for multiple hours checking out the wildlife, stopping and going as you wish and always knowing there is a boat following with plenty of drinks and snacks and ideas with different sections to go and ride. The flats will tempt you to try those harder tricks that you will never try around a beach because of too many obstacles. Out on the flats there is nothing but water so go for it!
All the kites are filled with a converted air tank and set up for you by the instructor (this makes it very hard to go home and have to pump up the kites yourself!!)
And if there is no wind you have the option of coming out with us on the house boat to the back country and going snorkeling, kayaking, lobstering, spearfishing or just sunbathing..

Travel and Accommodations

You should book any necessary flights into Miami. You then have the choice of catching a connecting flight down to Key West (45 mins), renting a car and driving (3-4 hours) or taking the shuttle bus (4 hours):
Florida Keys Shuttle

For accommodation we offer a one bed roomed self catering cottage that sleeps 4 (1 double bed + 1 pull out sofa bed) for $85.00 per night. The cottage is air-conditioned throughout, there is one bathroom off the bedroom, the living area has a sofa/sofa bed, TV, kitchenette and breakfast bar and there is a small courtyard out front. The cottage is 2 blocks off the main Duval street so within easy walking distance from everything.

If this is already booked you have the choice of a range of Guest houses and Hotels. A few suggestions are:

For a friendly, comfortable and reasonably priced guest house we recommend The Popular House or for a slightly higher price Westwinds Inn. For those on a tighter budget we suggest the Youth Hostel which also offers private rooms. For more options check out Key West Info.

About Key West

Water and Weather conditions:

Waters - Shallow, warm waters with an average year round water temperature of 74 degrees.
Winds - average 12 - 15mph and there are generally a couple of days a week with 20mph winds.
Being an island means that whatever way the wind is blowing we have a suitable spot to kite.

The island

Key West is actually an island and the southern most point of the US. It is unlike the rest of America and has its own private meaning of 'manyana'! If you are looking for big city life and a fast pace then Key West is not for you.

The island is 4 miles long and one mile wide, so getting around is pretty easy and if you want transport all you really need to rent is a bike or a moped.

Key West is well known for its nightlife and has a bar to suit all tastes - from the world famous tourist bar 'Sloppy Joes' to the local bars such as the 'Green Parrot' or 'Schooner Wharf'.

Restaurants are in abundance with fresh fish being on everyone's menu - we will of course recommend you to our secret spots.

Key West is also world famous for its sunsets so accordingly there is a nightly celebration with everyone gathering at sunset pier with music, street entertainers and of course plenty of pina coladas.

Kite Surf the Earth owner and tour guide Paul Menta has lived in Key West for 15 years and will give you a locals only tour to the best restaurants, bars, and activities that Key West has to offer.
